I think, you know, it's people always ask me why I'm afraid of death.
Why am I afraid of death?
Of course you are, right?
Like you've never seen death.
You've never had to experience it.
In many ways, contemporary society is set up such that
You never have to encounter a dead body, you never have to encounter a dying person, and a lot of that is great, right?
A lot of that is because we live longer, we're healthier, we're so blessed to have health care systems that keep us alive, you know, well into our 80s, most of us.
But it also means that we're not going through what my grandparents went through, which was experiencing grief at a really young age.
Yeah.
Um, you know, both of my, both sets of my grandparents, they had 11 siblings.
Wow.
Yeah.
Very reproductive family back then.
Both sets of my grandparents had 11 siblings, and I think only two or three of them made it through to adulthood.
Wow.
So childhood mortality was such that in 1990 in Australia, something like 30% of people died before the age of five.
Right.
So we have this extraordinary childhood mortality that's almost evaporated, right?
