Because a lot of people, you ask a lot of people, what is your image of a good death?
They say one is free of suffering, free of pain.
But a lot of people's lives are full of suffering, and a lot of people's lives are full of pain.
You know, a lot of people's lives, they don't have full control over their body.
They do have to rely on other people.
And so I'd hate to think that those kind of lives are devalued by people wanting to access VAD.
There's a lot of physicians who think that it goes against the Hippocratic Oath to offer VADs.
We have conscientious objectors to VAD in the same way that we have conscientious objectors to some forms of obstetrics and gynecological care and abortion and miscarriage care.
Um, and then we also have kind of more difficult emerging areas around VAD legislation.
So we have one really big emerging and kind of quite thorny ethical issue is the issue of VAD and dementia.
Ah, yes.
Which I cannot work out in my head where I stand on it.
So, you know, you might be someone who says, look, I know I'm going to get dementia, and I know at a certain point I may not be able to recognize myself, might not be able to recognize my friends and family.
If I ever get to that point, I would like you to end my life through V.I.D.
Right?
And there are some states and territories around the world, not in Australia, that have that option currently.
We don't have it in Australia.
Because the question becomes, down the track, if you ask that person with dementia would they like to end their life, they might say no.
Right?
