What then?
I find it a really difficult, almost philosophical problem.
Yeah.
Like, is the person that you ask in ten years' time with the dementia the same person as the person who signed the form ten years ago?
Um, and there's some evidence to suggest from Canada, at least, where this system does exist in some provinces, that
the family might also say, well, we know that this person is no longer a dad.
That's no longer a dad, right?
It's a different person entirely.
But that person seems pretty happy.
They seem pretty content with their life.
So maybe we don't actually want them to access VAD.
It's a really thorny issue.
Yes.
No simple answers.
But again, I think it points to this idea that
because we're not willing to talk about death at all, and because that means we're not willing to advocate for greater investment in palliative care or hospice care or in-home hospice, that
We kind of never get to that debate.
Right?
And those kind of issues get left off the table.
