And that's because prostate cancer tends to, again, be very indolent and do nothing.
And if you screen aggressively, then you might find a little something, maybe the PSA score goes up a little bit, then you're putting an elderly patient through multiple biopsies or
radiology, CT scans, or even subjecting them to treatment that they ultimately really won't benefit from or that they don't need.
So there's been a little bit of a pushback on having older patients screened regularly.
Now, that having been said, Don, if you're the president of the United States, pretty much one would think that all preventive measures
all screening, anything that we can do for a person in such an important position to be diagnosed early or to pick up any red flags before there's any complications, you'd think that they would have that.
So frankly, I don't know if he had a PSA test or if he had been having regular prostate exams.
That hasn't been released, certainly not at any detail.
But it would be really a shame for him as a patient.
Right.
Not even thinking about his presidency.
It would just be a shame for him if he hadn't had the screening, which could have picked it up earlier.
You know, 10 years seems like a long time for me, but I absolutely recognize his point that even aggressive, most aggressive prostate cancer still takes some time to spread.
You know, it starts within the prostate, then it goes to kind of local tissues, then it goes to lymph nodes, then it goes to local other organs, right, the bladder.
And by the time it moves all the way out of that sort of area of your pelvis and to get to your bones or your lungs or your liver, those are other places that it spreads, it generally has been a long time.
Now, there's one caveat, you know, there are about one or 2% of these cancers are
are very rare and very, very aggressive, then can grow over the course of under a year.
But the vast majority, even of aggressive cancers, still take several years to spread to the degree that President Biden's has spread.
You know, here's what I think.
Again, 80% of men over the age of 80 have some prostate cancer cells that will probably do nothing at all.
