And he comes back to Russia and starts pumping out this far-right stuff.

And he is joined by people like Alexander Solzhenitsyn and in the nineteen nineties, especially the people who are opposing Yeltsin.

who is not, I think, a great liberal or a great democrat, but less insane than some of the people we're talking about, right?

Because basically, for the first eight, nine years of his rule, people are pretty happy to go along with what Putin is selling and do whatever is happening because they're making money like they never made money before.

Because the country defaults on its debt in nineteen ninety-eight.

Everybody's very poor.

Life is pretty bad for most Russians in the nineteen nineties in terms of material goods.
