So as I walk through these beliefs, I want you to think beyond SPD.
Where else in your organization have you accepted dysfunction as inevitable?
Where else have you stopped questioning?
Where else is is a belief masquerading as a fact?
Now, let me say this.
These beliefs didn't come from nowhere.
They have origins.
They made sense at some point, or at least they were understandable given the circumstances.
The baby elephant wasn't irrational for stopping its attempts to escape.
Given its size and strength at the time, stopping made sense.
The problem is the circumstances change, but the belief didn't.
And that's the same thing that we're seeing in health care.
Some of these beliefs formed in an era when surgical volumes were lower, when instrumentation was simpler, when the financial stakes were different.
They may have been reasonable then, but health care has changed.
Surgical complexities has exploded.
Margins have tightened.
Competition has intensified.
And the tolerance for inefficiency has evaporated.
The beliefs haven't kept up.
