And, you know, what I would say is I don't think that losing muscle is going to be a big problem for most people.
Now, saying that, there's a group that I worry about.
It's a group I'm in, Wendy.
It's older adults.
And I don't worry so much about losing it, but when you regain it, several studies have shown that when older adults lose weight and then regain it, they don't regain as much muscle as they lose.
So we still have a lot of research to do in this area.
But for most people, the medications work.
They work by reducing your food intake.
You lose weight.
Most of it is fat.
Some of it is muscle.
Where physical activity can help, particularly resistance exercise, it may be able to limit that loss of muscle.
You're still going to lose some, but physical activity combined with a sufficient protein intake is probably the single best thing you can do to minimize loss of muscle.
Absolutely.
And you're an RD, so you've studied nutrition a lot.
And I think nutrition's playing a different role now than before.
For
decades we focused on nutrition for weight loss.
Now the meds are doing the weight loss, so nutrition, I think, plays a different function.
If you're going to be eating 25 to 30% fewer calories, the quality of your calories play a role.
