Lutheran so-called heretics in England in late fifteen thirty-one.

Um, Thomas Bilney in Norwich and Richard Bayfield in London are executed for heresy, burned at the stake.

This had not happened in England in some time, and the way in which heresy is persecuted uh at this time

um speaks to the fear really of heresy as a contagion, as a contaminant, as something that will breed sedition and lead to anarchy.

And so Henry is very clear that he doesn't want it in his realm.

I think the other reason that we see these executions is that the person who replaced Thomas Woolsey is Thomas More.

And Thomas More wants nothing to do with the divorce.

He's allied with Catherine on this, um, but he is also a polemicist in the Reformation debates.

And so this is a role he can play in executing the King's will as Lord Chancellor.

root out heresy from the realm.

Think it's difficult to tell with something like this because they're doing it in such small steps.

Moore resigns in May of fifteen thirty-two in reaction to literally the the day after what's called the submission of the clergy.

And this comes after a series of of events and and back and forth um with convocation, um, the clerical assembly and parliaments over things that are

actually start quite small and then grow and grow.

But what Henry wants, and in essence what he gets is the submission of the clergy to his headship of the church.

So this is in some ways the the climax of all of those little things that have been happening.

I say so-called submission because William Warham, that former Lord Chancellor who is still Archbishop of Canterbury,

manipulates things so that the submission is actually only six bishops, two of whom say yes, one of whom abstains, and three of whom say no with qualifications.

And so this submission is really an act of defiance because
