And along with the clergy, one of the first people who's asked to take the oath is Thomas More, who's not a cleric, but has aligned himself with this sort of faction against the break with Rome.
And he will not.
He refuses.
A handful of people refuse to take the oath.

And so he's imprisoned.
And by the original terms of the act of succession, that's kind of all they can do in terms of putting pressure on Moore and Fisher and others is imprisonment and forfeiture of goods.
At this point it's not treason to refuse to take the oath.
And that doesn't seem to be a big enough of a stick, essentially, to intimidate them.
I think the Treasons Act comes uh directly out of this realization that they're not doing enough to enforce the oath.
Uh it's not scary enough to be imprisoned, as difficult as that is.
And so the Treasons Act expands the definition of treason beyond the bounds of what anyone would have thought reasonable to include any denial.
Heretic, a schismatic
to deny the queen her status, to deny any of the heirs.
And s this goes through parliament and
is immediately causes chaos.
The suggestion is is that it's Parliament, the House of Commons, who adds that it must be a malicious denial.
