And so what I witness is young people sometimes digging their heels in some of these labels.

as a kind of act of assertion, no, this is really what's going on for me.

Or on the other hand, saying, even if it changes, it doesn't matter.

It's just a word and I'll just use a different word.

So there's a bit of flexibility there of, yeah, this might change and evolve and I'm not attached to it, but what's the big deal in using it right now?

Yeah, I think there's a kind of well-founded concern there.

I mean, certainly, you know, to have so many identity variables to weigh at a young age is complicated for young people.

I often remind, you know, young people and adults that orientation, so the kind of enduring direction of my attraction only is clear over the course of, you know,

years, not months, not weeks.

And so we really don't have an orientation at 10, 11, 12, 13.

We really develop that in real time and in relationships with real people and in our lives.

And so I do think there is a reason to be cautious about just kind of swallowing whole this process as a fundamentally freeing ideal.

And we try to do that in the book.

And then we also try to give voice to the fact that young people will tell us, and I think there's probably something to be said about this, that they do feel like they get some answers from some of the frameworks that are present right now.

They feel like, to your point, I have a sense of belonging, even in the ways I feel like I don't belong.

So I can feel tethered to something real, which is
