Well, first of all, welcome to the podcast, Professor Ben.
I think the topic of habits is it's evergreen, but at the start of the year people always, you know, take on new habits.
But first of all, I think it's worth people understanding what a habit actually is, because I think there's a bit of confusion between
you know, routines which people voluntarily enforce on themselves and then a habit which is somewhat automated.
So when we talk about associations, the environment plays a huge role in those associations.
So
you know, the environment can be a trigger or a cue for that habit.
So if you walk into a certain room in the house that is associated with a habit.
So
You know, for most people a bedroom is associated with sleep, but you know, even more specifically
going to the kitchen and going to a specific area in a kitchen may be associated with a certain
cooking habit or a certain you know, you eat that cereal or that breakfast bar in that place.
So that's a huge trigger.
Can people also be triggered
So there's a lot of research suggesting that it's mostly subconscious and sort of automatic, you know, fifty percent is what it says, but you uh were involved in research suggesting it could be up to two thirds of our habits could be just this automatic, uh subconscious process.
the reason a habit exists in humans is to minimize the amount of actual conscious thinking that needs to happen.
