So it's almost reflexive in a way that you're not wasting time
And that may have been somewhat contributing to some survival mechanism before where you just do something automatically and you don't take effort or brain space thinking about doing something.
But now, obviously, you know, with devices and modern life, you've got good and bad habits, which is more than just about survival.
It's about pleasure as well.
You know, people have now
Well, I actually on this point, uh you know, what is the line that we can draw between a habit that is formed because of psychology initially
Right?
So like drinking a cup of coffee, but then it's driven more by physiology, where something habitual becomes addictive nicotine, vaping, coffee,
All of those things where actually it starts off as a psychological fixation or driven by something.
You know, they want to have something around their mouth or drink something hot in the morning, but then actually there are certain active ingredients in those habits they may do, like nicotine or caffeine, which actually overrides physiology and makes it addictive.
On that topic of smoking, um, over the last few years we've seen the rise of people vaping and you know, there's a a lot of media coverage and even, you know
The NHS health organizations promote vaping as a safer alternative to smoking, which, you know, for the vast majority of health reasons, it may be a safer alternative, but it's not safe in and of itself.
And a lot of people are vaping instead of smoking, but there's a lot of people now vaping who would never have smoked at all.
When we're talking about breaking a habit and changing that initial root
psychological association, is that really the best thing we can do from a psychological perspective?
Because the core mechanism of fixating on, you know, oral fixation, having that fixation and using it as a crutch to, you know, offset any stress or nervousness or anxiety, that's why maybe a lot of people smoke.
They have a, you know, cigarette to, you know, get some calmness.
And then the nicotine provides that energy or focus.
The vaping is doing the same thing, but it's still harmful for health overall.
We also have other tools which are non-nicotine based to break that habit.
