It was a study done in conjunction with NIH.
They sent tissue off to be examined.
They looked at presence of
heavy metals and toxins.
They looked at presence of bacteria, and they did not see a statistically significant anything across those broad categories.
There was an association with baseline higher levels of anxiety in the breast implant illness group, which is not to say that it's not real.
I think that's a really, really important distinction.
But I will tell patients who come in and see me if they are already a highly anxious person or have a diagnosis of anxiety, we really need to think hard about whether we're going to go in and place a breast implant because we know that's a risk factor for developing breast implant illness.
Also interesting is the brand of implant that I like to use, which is called Motiva.
If there's an inflammatory component to this, which has not been proven, but just in general to have a lower level of inflammation in your body, that specific implant is associated with the least amount of inflammatory response of any implant.
So I like that as well.
No, because it's not a medical diagnosis.
But it's a very controversial subject.
It is something that impacts a lot of women.
And so that's why I'm proud of our plastic surgery societies because they've taken this very seriously.
They have pushed a lot of our funding dollars towards taking a look at these subjects.
groups of women and trying to understand you know because just because we don't have a diagnosis or know something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist so these things are under study and the great news is that all of our studies show that if you just take the implants out overwhelmingly these symptoms disappear in about six weeks so that's fantastic news yeah unusual yes and you don't have to do a capsulectomy or cut out like whatever is remaining on the breast to have that happen
Right.
And then if you were anxious and depressed before, then you're really anxious and depressed after when now your body doesn't look normal either.
And so then there's this whole like explant regret group as well.
