The Slasinger family were buying up that site from the nineteen sixties in order to develop it.

Um there was various development plans.

Um Scott Tallinn Walker were due to design it in the nineteen seventies, recession hit.

Patrick Gallagher, infamous associate of Charlie Hohe, bought it in nineteen eighty-one.

He went bankrupt.

Um and then it wasn't developed until nineteen uh wasn't open until nineteen eighty eight by a British company.

So there's always been quite a lot of controversy around it.

And even, you know, it's kind of interesting the

uh you know what people are saying and reacting to at the moment about not liking the look of the new development because I can remember nobody liked the look of the Stevens Green as it now is when it opened in nineteen eighty eight.

You know, there was huge controversy.

It looked like a Mississippi paddle boat, it looked like a wedding cake, you know, and actually only there was only four units that opened on the day it was launched, despite this huge campaign with more

Maureen Potter, Ronnie Drew, Twink, they were all involved in that ad that you played just there.

There is, yeah.

I mean they're designed to keep you moving and keep you spending.

And a bit like a supermarket, the things that you want to go and see are usually quite far apart from each other.

But I think the Stevens Green does have a particular difficulty with with with flow.

And um y you know, I was there on Thursday just doing a little bit of a recce and you have to walk a really long distance to get from A to B.

So that doesn't help.

Yeah, and particularly as there's so many um empty units around Grafton Street as it is, but I used the opportunity to have a little bit of a uh a wander around um uh the city centre.
