So I wandered into the Georgia Street arcade, which was w the one of the like it was the original shopping centre in in Dublin that opened in eighteen eighty one and it was based on the arcade model that was popular in the eighteenth century.

And 19th centuries in Europe.

Covered street, exactly.

And it is operating broadly as it was intended, with little retailers and um, you know, places places to eat.

Um and that was largely developed by the Pym family, who had a big department store on the opposite side of the road that was demolished in the nineteen sixties and rebuilt in the nineteen seventies.

Um but that's a beautiful building.

Like it just is a lovely example of Victorian um architecture and it's still broadly doing what it intended to do.

But it was controversial too 'cause there was a whole load of markets cleared for it to exist.

No, it was very much a much of a a European move, but you can even trace the arcades back to the b bazaars and markets of the ancient worlds, like Trajan's Forum from the first uh hundred year you know, hundred years AD in Rome.

Well, that was an American model.

So you had the European idea of the bazaar and then you had the American model, which th like the first American shopping mall is only nineteen fifty six in Minnesota.

So it was an idea of bringing a bit of America to the to the Irish suburbs and

Uh you know it was it was opened by Lamas who was, you know, very much looking at what was happening in America in terms of Irish modernisation.

So um it was meant to be based on on an archetype in California.
