What they knew and understand was I was causing them terror.

I was a threat.

I was hurting them.

There is something different about the look that comes back from a primate, a non-human primate.

And they know that you know that they are just another version of us.

Jim called me one day and said, Lisa, and this was, I think, 1993, 94, maybe 95.

And he said, Lisa, LEMSEP is closing.

I would set up my big traps, and I would bait the traps, and I'd put my little string on the door, and I'd, you know, move 10 meters away.

And I'd wait for the macaques.

And I was generally very conscious about not trapping mothers with infants.

But I was greedy, and a mom came in, and she had an infant, and five or six other animals came in, and I closed the door, and the usual happened.

And I look down, and that infant is still clinging to the net.

She knew what I meant.

She came in.

She grabbed that kid, stuck him on her chest, and turned around and spun around and went straight back out.

That was the purest example of maternal devotion that I have ever witnessed.

Nothing was going to stop her from reclaiming her child from me.
