And then down they go into the cave.
If you're looking at other continents, you might see things like sheep or goats or deer, you know, things that are moving around quickly and falling into caves.
Absolutely.
And we do see some of the really big megafauna, such as Diprotodon and Slugomaturus, the sort of
half-ton marsupial browser.
The interesting thing about those that we find at NARICOR is usually they're represented by not completely grown adults because the adults probably aren't going to fit down some of these holes.
Most of the holes are well and truly less than a meter in diameter.
They're quite narrow.
So there's a body size filtering effect.
Yeah, I'm very grateful to them because they're a great source of information and several species are well known to use caves.
So when an owl hunts, it'll grab some prey and it'll swallow that.
They come back and what they do is produce a pellet that is all of the indigestible bits, like the hair and the bones, and they literally cough that up.
Absolutely.
Huh.
The pellet itself has hair and other sort of soft things that sort of hold it together, and over time it'll just sort of start to break down.
So generally by the time you get hundreds of thousands of years down the track, you've got the bones.
themselves, the actual bones.
You can also tell a bit about whether it's owls because of the composition of the bones.
We talked a bit about accumulating modes can be biased.
If I was to come in without the knowledge of owl pellets and look at a fossil deposit that had been just accumulated by owls, I might conclude, 100,000 years ago, the world was run by small mammals.
