She wasn't on her own, this aristocratic woman coming into a working class area, fighting for the rights of working class women.

She also had this partnership and it was a real partnership in terms of both public and private actions.

And so Eva's

I suppose she's a renaissance woman, really, we could call her, because of all the different aspects to her character.

So it is very hard to fit her into any one category and then put her on the shelf in a bookshop that she's in the literary history section or any other section.

She fits all of those categories.

Well, yes, but I think it wasn't just Ireland.

I think it's both a mixture of people not acknowledging the relationship between the two women and its centrality to their lives.

I mean, from the time they met in Italy to Eva's death, they were living together.

And even after that, Esther Roper worked with Markievicz to ensure that Eva's work wouldn't be forgotten and her letters and her poems forgotten.

And that their relationship is central to their lives and the lives of so many of the other queer revolutionary women.

But in Eva's case, there was a deliberate attempt to actually obfuscate or cover up the relationship between them or say it wasn't what it manifestly is.

It was a relationship between two women.

It was the primary relationship in their lives.

As many historians say now, we really have to move away from the idea of was it sexual or not.

That doesn't really matter.

That's not the question to ask.

The question is, was this relationship the primary relationship, the love relationship in their lives?

And it is, obviously.

As you said, they're buried together under a quotation of Sappho.
