Great question, because that is, I think, at the heart of this current idea that there's a youth mental health crisis in Western countries and in Europe.
The evidence that's being used by the people who say there's a youth mental health crisis is based on self-report questionnaires that children take.
those are full of false positives.
There are papers, I've published one of them, that show that self-reports are mostly false positives.
So the rates on those questionnaires that are being given out have gone up over the years, but it's not mental disorders.
Mental disorders are a completely different thing than being unhappy or discontented.
It involves functional impairment,
It's more serious.
It's usually more genetically based and lifelong than just popping out of nowhere.
They need to be handled very differently.
