Sleep is underrated.
It is probably the number one thing that most of my patients are not doing well enough.
And I live in Austin and people are super healthy.
But when I really get into it, many people are not sleeping long enough.
So what does that mean?
At least seven and a half to eight hours of sleep, especially for women per night, having a consistent sleep-wake schedule, increase in sleep variability, meaning the hours of which you're sleeping, has been associated with taking longer to get pregnant.
For every hour or less a man sleeps, he has lower testosterone and lower sperm counts.
For every hour or less a woman sleeps, she'll get fewer eggs in an IVF cycle.
And if a couple, either member of the couple reports having poor sleep quality, it takes them longer to get pregnant.
Sleep is when your body is going to clear inflammation.
It is setting the stage for your entire day.
For many of us, I have celiac.
So you and I both have a level of inflammation that we get every single day that not everybody does, right?
But that means it's even more important that these five non-negotiables I pay attention to.
And if you can't be perfect, like I will get less sleep tonight because I'm flying home, then the other ones become more important, right?
We don't have to seek perfection.
Instead, I really want us to think about this burden as a movable scale.
So if sleep isn't going to be where it is, the others become more important.
OK, second from there, we're going to take and I'm going to use my weight and say it's actually building muscle.
So I get asked about exercise and fertility probably every single day.
