That's faster than the blink of an eye.
But as soon as I start talking to you, those snap judgments go out the window.
It is a reason to talk because conversation and interaction clarifies.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So this has been some of the most fascinating research that I've learned about and also observed myself in our research in the entire book, because there are very strong beliefs that people have about their personalities and what they like and dislike.
And there's some accuracy to that.
But when it comes to introversion and extroversion, what researchers consistently find is that introversion and extroversion is really a belief that we have about ourselves.
The standard personality scales that we use measure people's beliefs about themselves typically.
And that means that those beliefs about ourselves predict our expectations and our choices actually better than they predict our experiences.
So the way to think about extroversion and introversion isn't as the type of person you are, but rather as the type of person you think you are.
The type of person you think you are can become the type of person you are.
So if you think that you don't like engaging with other people, you might choose not to and then might not find out that you could be wrong on those dimensions too.
And what researchers find, including in our own research, is that, say, before a conversation, extroversion tends to predict people's beliefs about how the conversation will go and how much they'll enjoy it.
better than it predicts how much they actually enjoy it, which means the biggest gaps between my beliefs about how this interaction is going to go and how I actually feel afterwards comes from those who are the most introverted, which makes sense because they also have less experience as well when more introverted.
There are other beliefs about introversion and extroversion that are also miscalibrated a bit.
One is about fatigue and tiredness.
Turns out everybody's tired after talking.
Extroverts and introverts alike.
