Well, the building that's there is called Burns Folly and it was built in recent centuries.
So the idea of Cú Chulainn's castle derives from the fact that the mound that that castle sits upon is
said to have been built by Bertram de Verdon, an Anglo-Norman lord in the late 12th, early 13th century.
So there was a castle moat there centuries and centuries ago.
But as with many Anglo-Norman castle moats, they're actually built on top of pre-existing mounds, which are almost all prehistoric burial mounds.
Now, the mythological tradition is that that was the birthplace of Cú Chulainn, and that's the place where he lived.
So in essence...
Cú Chulainn's castle is just the name that's used for it.
The surviving ruin on top of the mound is a recent structure.
It's got nothing really to do with Cú Chulainn except for that it's sited on the mound associated with Cú Chulainn.
But that's where the original Dundalk was.
Long before Dundalk grew up as a modern town, that was a place of importance.
Stretching back into probably the Iron Age period,
possibly even further back.
That could be a Bronze Age burial mound under that structure.
It could even be a Neolithic passage tomb.
