The cells can harness those electrochemical gradients and they can use them to do a whole host of really important biological functions.
So we talked about the brain, your muscles, absorbing nutrients, all this kind of stuff.
They all critically depend on these electrolytes moving across these electrochemical gradients.
So that's why they're so fundamentally important for a whole host of different aspects of our biology.
Yeah.
So the idea that sugar is bad, I think, has come from ultra-processed foods that have lots and lots of sugar in them.
And that's definitely bad.
That has some negative effects on your biology, for sure.
But your body also uses sugar.
As I said, your brain uses a huge amount of sugar every day to generate energy for all that brain activity.
In the context of hydration, the reason that it's important is because there's this really amazing molecule called the sodium glucose co-transporter.
And what that is, it's a molecule in your intestines that drives water absorption when you consume it, but only in the presence of oxygen.
sodium, so salt electrolytes, and glucose.
So that's why all rehydration formulas have both of those.
So it's kind of like a door with two locks, right?
If you open one lock with the glucose, the door doesn't open.
The other one with the sodium, it doesn't open.
If you have both of them together, you open the door and then the water can flow into your body.
And this molecule is, again, really, really powerful.
So if you just have one glucose molecule and two sodium ions moving into the cell, that's going to absorb 260 water molecules at the same time.
