world around them.
So at certain times of the year, even today, they might actually go to entrances like this to perform rituals, trying to get fertility, especially when it comes to rain, as well as agriculture itself.
Exactly.
For the last 25 years, I've been exploring through various different parts of the jungle.
In fact, my first trip here was in 1998, about
28 years ago and just coming through here we can spot about 12 different caves in the area
Yeah, so right now we're going to go here on the left side.
As we move along close to that wall, we're going to set up some ropes so we can move along easily.
The ancient Maya probably had some kind of system set up, almost like a stairway or entranceway into here that is now long collapsed along the way.
So likely they had something set up here that they could easily move into the cave itself.
Exactly.
The Maya are very connected to their landscape and using it to their advantage.
Early on as I was walking up, I saw a lot of these check dams or weirs along the old creek bed, as well as farming terraces and one of these small little structures on the ground.
We can see how the Maya are modifying the landscape to suit their needs as time goes along.
A lot of these actually start to happen after 680, especially around caves where we see a lot more intense use and a lot more modification of the landscape at that point in time.
