The Maya perceived the underworld to have nine different levels.
Oh, really?
No, it is four levels going down.
a fifth level at the bottom, and then four levels coming back up.
The fifth level is meant to be a big, big open space.
where the gods commune.
Okay.
And in my experience doing caves across Belize, big, big open spaces is generally where you find more activity.
Okay.
Because these are perceived, again by the Maya, to be where the gods commune or they are omnipresent.
And certain deities are believed to live or dwell in the underworld.
Most of those are earth-related spirits, which include mountain gods,
earth lords, agricultural deities.
In the Maya creation mythology, both the sun and the moon emerged from the underworld at the beginning of time.
So caves, Xibalba, the underworld is in the place of where life comes from.
So it's an important space for the ancient Maya.
We're heading to a big open space now.
This is exciting.
We should see more material as we move into that space.
And that's why the cave is called Centipede Cave, right?
