Of course, neither community achieved its aim in 1960.
And so that left quite a bit of dissatisfaction.
Well, you have skipped a very important period, which was the period between 1963 and 1974.
And that was important because in 1963, in November of 1963, President Makarios, who was also, of course, the archbishop, proposed 13 points to change the constitution of the island because the Republic of Cyprus had been established with a power-sharing constitution.
And for many Greek Cypriots, that power-sharing constitution seemed to give much too much power to an 18% minority, the Turkish Cypriot community.
And so Makaryas proposed changes.
These were opposed by the Turkish Cypriot leadership and the community as a whole.
and created, again, a lot of tension.
And when an incident occurred right before Christmas in 1963, in which two Turkish Cypriots were killed, it ignited about 10 days of violence.
As a result of that, 90% of the Turkish Cypriot community was either displaced or experienced displacement
Of course it does.
There have been protests on the island against those bases.
Occasionally, over the past decades, there have been protests.
But one of the main reasons that people don't protest perhaps as much as they otherwise would is the division of the island and the presence of Turkish troops in the north of the island.
And, of course, British troops are in some sense a guarantee of safety.
So that has meant that there hasn't been as much protest as there might otherwise have been.
