It's this misuse of power.

It's this power gradient that people have and they assume they have more power over someone else and they don't want to be perceived that way.

So it's normal to feel uncomfortable.

It's just like parenting, though.

I want you to think about this.

Those of you who are parents, your job as a parent is not to be their friend.

Your job is to be their parent or to be their leader.

And that involves at times being brutally honest with them and saying no.

OK, I'm thinking of kids.

You know, we just spent a week on vacation with my grandkids.

I don't have a problem saying no to them.

OK, like, no.

And, you know, where's your manners?

You know, and please and thank you.

My daughter does a really good job with that.

Please and thank you.

just basic manners.

But again, your job is not to be their friend as their manager, as their leader.

Your job is to be their leader.

And sometimes with that comes an uncomfortable conversation.
