to just be dealt with a bad situation and not know like what the next day is going to bring.

And that's what I brought into the exam room.

I felt every ounce of his pain and his heaviness.

I understood those tears because I remember what that felt like.

Yes, it was in a different context.

It was me getting that, you know, rejection letter number 37 or, you know, opening up that email for the second time and finding out you didn't pass your board exams by, you know, three points and what that gut punch, what that gut punch feels like.

And I just said, you know what?

I remember the saying, okay, I think, God, I see what you're up to now.

And that was how I started connecting with a lot of my patients.

And it was evident.

you know, there'd be, Hey, where's Dr. Roberts?

I'm bringing my mom to come see you.

I told my neighbor about you and I want, they want to come and see you now.

And that's how my patient base, you know, started to grow because we were connecting on a much different level before we, I was ever walking in there having conversations with them about, you know, getting screened for colon cancer or talking about their high blood pressure or this, that, and the other.

And, and,

it dawned on me that the very thing that I was ashamed of, the very thing that I was embarrassed about and didn't want to talk about was the very thing that was making me shine in an exam room.

And I started using it as an advantage.

You know, I got asked to give a keynote address in 2022 at a nonprofit organization, the I Am Able Foundation.

We try to increase underrepresented minorities in medicine, but we essentially pair high school through college students with a physician mentor.

Been volunteering with them for 10 years.
