What question opens this episode about being told 'no' by the system?

Elizabeth Amorino 0:00
What do you do when the system keeps telling you no? Not once, not twice, but over and over again. Today's conversation is about what happens when you stop seeing your setbacks as disqualifications and start recognizing them as the very thing that qualifies you. We want to share with you Dr. Renee Roberts. She is on a mission to change how people see their setbacks, proving that your greatest struggle isn't what disqualifies you, it's what uniquely qualifies you. She is a practicing family medicine physician serving underserved patients on the South Side of Chicago. and a transformational keynote speaker helping individuals and organizations turn their greatest challenges into their most powerful advantages.

She recently gave her TEDx talk, Who Gets to Heal?, challenging the systems that filter out the very healers our communities need most. She is focused on growing her speaking platform and equipping people with the mindset and tools to keep showing up and communicating their worth, even when the system says no. Welcome to Communication Skills for Working Women. I'm Elizabeth.

So today we are joined by Dr. Renee Roberts, a certified... a board-certified family medicine physician, a Castle Connolly top doctor, which I looked this up because I didn't know exactly what that was, but it represents this top 7% of practicing doctors in the U.S. And you've gotten this more than once.
Rosemay Webster 2:20
That's a big deal.

Who is Dr. Rene Roberts and why does she reframe setbacks as qualifications?

Rosemay Webster 2:22
Yes, twice.
Elizabeth Amorino 2:23
You have to be like, you don't apply for this. Someone has to recommend you. Another physician has to recommend you. That is correct. So congratulations on that. Thank you. She's also a TEDx speaker who gets to heal. Who knows firsthand what it means to be told you don't belong and keep going anyway. She received 50 medical school rejection letters. I said 50, five, zero, not 15, 50 medical school rejection letters, failed her board exams twice and still became the doctor of her patients say they've been searching for. Just saying that makes me just so excited to hear you really excited to be, to have this time with you today. So thank you so much today. Dr. Renee helps people stop hiding their setbacks and start leveraging them as their greatest competitive advantage through her limits method.

Dr. Renee has been featured on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, WGN, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, and now the Communication Skills for Working Women podcast. Dr. Renee, we are so glad that you are here with us. I had the opportunity to hear her speak in person a couple of months ago, earlier this year, and I was moved to by being in that room with her. And I just want to write down, I want to share two things that I wrote down. I had a whole page of notes. She doesn't know that I'm doing this.
Rosemay Webster 3:59
No. We go rogue sometimes, Dr. Renee.
Elizabeth Amorino 4:03
I love it. Oh my gosh.
Dr. Rene Roberts 4:05
I'm all ears. I want to hear this.
Elizabeth Amorino 4:08
I want to read all my notes, but I won't because really everyone wants to hear your story. But I wrote, our darkest moments reveal us. And that has stayed with me a lot since I heard you last. As different things have happened, I'm like, what is this revealing about me? And your struggles don't just build you. They become someone else's permission slip. And that, when I was reading about your rejection letters and failing the board and still going, and you're a Castle Conley top doctor now, that permission slip that through sharing your story is giving all of us that have been my setbacks this permission slip to keep going. So thank you.
Dr. Rene Roberts 4:53
Oh my gosh. Well, thank you for that fantastic introduction.
