It's always best to seek to understand and make it safe to ask questions.

So I was doing this work, our Department of Culture Change Initiative, and

in a NICU.

And I'm just going to say some of those nurses are brilliant and they can be tough on other nurses, especially newer nurses.

Okay.

It's just historically what I've seen.

So don't judge me for that.

It's the truth.

And what I know about a lot of NICU nurses is that they're so protectant of their babies.

that if they see any sign of incompetence, that's it, you're done, you will get the growers and feeders.

And again, I've seen this over and over again.

But we were working on that, and there were some really strong personalities, very committed to their babies.

And they were talking about creating a culture where it was safe to ask questions, safe to speak up.

And the manager overheard one of her stronger nurses, who tended to be condescending and tough on new people,

Say to a new nurse, look, we know you don't know everything, okay?

We want you to feel safe asking questions here.

I don't want to find out that you did something that you weren't sure you were doing it correctly.

You better ask some questions or so.

She was still kind of tough, but she reinforced that we want you to feel safe asking questions here, which is a beautiful thing.

So you need to sit down and you need to be honest with your charge nurse who is not behaving in a professional manner.
