Hi, I'm Dr. Richard Duggins.
I'm a consult psychiatrist, psychotherapist and associate medical director for leadership and culture.
I'm also the author of a book called Burnout Free Working.
So I'm thinking about my clinical work, thinking about meeting people, health and social care staff, who are presenting with burnout.
And I see some really significant things they do.
So the normal person who presents in my clinic is looking at the floor, feeling ashamed, saying, what have I done wrong?
And then I listen.
And when I listen, I hear that they've gone through months, if not years, of overwhelming stress, often not enough support.
And there's been a progression to their presentation with burnout.
And in that listening, what we both come to realise together is this isn't a mystery.
This isn't something they've done wrong.
This has been because they've had too many drains in their life, perhaps work related, perhaps home related, perhaps related to how the worker is relating to them in their kind of how they're treated or whether things have been fair or support.
too many drains and not enough support going on in their life, not enough radiators of energy.
And that's where it starts.
It starts with people thinking, actually, this isn't my fault.
This isn't something I've got wrong.
This is actually the situation I'm in.
And once you start, you can form a plan.
And I see people do various things.
So the big radiators, the things that help keep us well, are things like our support network.
