They maintain populations of predators and prey.

They give us the oxygen at the end of the day that we breathe at the bottom of the food chain from phytoplankton.

And they do that service from, you know, New Zealand all the way up to the equator and back every year.

So they are critically important.

So learning about them is pretty important to us.

Definitely in Australia they do.

Do they?

It's unfortunate.

But the good thing for the sharks is they're innocent until proven guilty.

It's hard to prove guilt in a fluid environment that's vast like the ocean.

um and you know several of us i have to take previously have been in areas where you know adverse interactions happen but what is important is is we would know nothing if we didn't tag them by tagging them we learn where they go understand what environmental variables drive there and we can better mitigate areas uh and new zealand's been a black hole for australia for a long time in the sense we have most of the adult sharks that then go up there in winter and i didn't really know anything about them so

At the end of the day, you look around your room and every single item in that room kills more people a year than sharks does, like toilets and pens and vending machines.

And so we inflate the risk of sharks massively, but when it happens, it's tragic.

So that's why we need to learn about them.

And the app is great for people who can be like, hey, look at my beach.

Wow, there's a great white shark there this morning.

Maybe I'll just swim in the shoreline or in the pools with that.

Yeah, so basically they turned the second-wire alarm telling me that I've got a shark coming in.

It's just ticked up.
