You may be purchasing cattle that don't have that longevity and stability in your herd.

I think you can compensate from that a little bit by your source and learning who that replacement female supplier is.

If you're consistent in that, then I think you can alleviate a lot of those problems too.

So that's always a risk though in buying replacements.

Historically, I think we have a lot higher culling rate on purchased cattle than we do on raised cattle.

And every time I see an economist do the math, they treat 'em as if they've got the same culling rates.

And my experience is not that.

So I think that's something we really have to use a sharp pencil on and be realistic on what those retention rates, longevity of those purchased cattle might be.

So that's one of those budgeting things.

You just gotta be realistic and everybody's always over optimistic.

Yeah.

In the cattle business.

I would probably keep that cow now because she d still has some teeth.

I'd identify her to evaluate every year after this to see whether she stays.

But as long as she's still milking enough to raise that big calf, has some teeth, I'd probably keep her, particularly in this market.

Answer's there.

Well here here's why I say it depends right now.

Because you you're gonna have to replace her with something.

Will it be cheaper to keep her around or to develop a heifer for two years?

So that's one of those things that I think you have to make that call and then decide why is she open?
