I saw some numbers yesterday that were talking about eleven dollars, twelve hundred dollars a cow cost.

If we're creeping up that high because of supplemental feeding and additional inputs, we may need to rethink that too.

This market turns the other way, that's gonna be a hard one to fix if we've adapted that much.

So anyway, every operation I think has to go through that evaluation and budgeting to kind of see what they can afford to pay.

As we've said already, right now's a time when we can afford to put a few more inputs into 'em to maintain that level of productivity.

particularly in drought or particularly if we think it's a short term drought situation, we can just get 'em through to the other side.

I think you can afford to feed some cows that you historically might not have.

So that's something to always have to think about and evaluate.

I completely agree with that.

And I think one of the criteria you can use for example in the red Angus breed they have the stability DPD.

And that's basically an index of whether or not they've got decent enough udders, feet, legs, and r reproductive performance that they'll stay in a herd a long time.

So whether we use a EPD or we have knowledge and data to back our own cows up, I think we have genetic lines that have better stability or longevity in a herd, and those are the ones we need to select from.

And that's normally why we always recommend if you're retaining heifers to select heifers from those cows that cave in the first cycle or two.
