So that really for me was the starting point for the study.

Do we understand why that is?

In part, yes.

I mean, but as I'm sure you can imagine, with these things, it's never just one factor, and we always have to be quite careful about how we attribute causation to why these things happen.

So in the review that I've just led, it was specifically designed to be able to attribute a degree of qualitative inference as to why women kind of experience these lower rates of career progression, high rates of stress, emotional exhaustion and anxiety.

And what we found was that women GPs in some cases are specifically sought out by certain patient groups because of what they do in those consultations.

So they listen closely, they explore the the psychosocial questions, explain treatment options and support holistic decisions.

And it's certainly not to say that male GPs don't do that.

They do, but it's slightly different for for women.

And in these consultations, we were finding that multiple benefits arise like stimulating greater patient disclosure.

And so all of this has a knock-on impact in that it's a heavier emotional labour, it increases the consultation time.

And none of this is inherently damaging in isolation, but it's the fact that this type of work is both unrecognized and unrewarded in the current system.

And so when you couple that with gendered expectations around care,

Roles, higher rates of mistreatment, which women experience as well, and also reduce leadership opportunities because they fall outside of the traditional contracted hours.

That's when you start to see that risk of stress, exhaustion, the implications on career.

And so that, yes, that all came out as a result of our review.

And there's also been some other work by one of my colleagues, Laura Jefferson, as well, who looked very specifically at the barriers and facilitators.

It is, yeah.

And I guess one of the best resources that I would signpost here, um, which really interrogates and pulls this apart, is a report that came out in twenty twenty by Dane Carol Black and Carol Woodhums.
