I tell my clients, you know, you have lived your life for 35 years, 40 years.

You are the expert in your story.

And I am going to be a witness to that, right?

I'm just here to kind of like listen and help you figure things out.

Tell me a little bit about what your life was like growing up and what were some of the messages that your parents sent you around love, around apologizing?

How do you think that's playing into what you're experiencing now?

So I think, again, it's a little bit of both.

It's like tying the past to the present and kind of going back and forth and seeing kind of like where the client lives, again, in the here and now.

Yeah, it's like we're not really supposed to wear like the detective hats.

We're not trying to catch a client lying.

Like when we're working with substance use, a lot of the times clients will say, you know, like I'm not using drugs.

And sometimes they are, right?

Because recovery is hard.

And our job isn't to figure out whether or not a client is telling the truth.
