They didn't speak English.
It just wasn't talked about in my family.
And it was only until I became a therapist and started doing the work that then finally I went.
I went to individual therapy.
I've been to couples therapy.
And now I'm like, oh, my God, I should have done this so much sooner.
It would have helped before even becoming a therapist in a lot of ways.
Well, that is also such a big question because depending on who you're asking, you're going to get a different response.
So if you were interviewing a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker, an MFT like me, you're going to get a different response probably from each person.
And that's because we all
do it or approach it in different ways, right?
So for us as couple and family therapists, we are working with an individual and trying to figure out what their inner world is, right?
What their belief systems are, how they're thinking about things, how they're feeling about things.
But we're also looking at it in the context of relationships and systems, right?
So, yes, we want to understand what you're experiencing, what's hurting you, what's painful, what's bothering you.
But how is that being experienced in the relation to your family, in the relation to your neighborhood, in the relation to your society?
Because we believe as MFTs that all of those things impact the way that you are navigating the world.
And so that's really our emphasis.
Whereas if you were to ask, I don't know, a psychologist or a different kinds of therapist, they might say, well, we're really concerned about behavior and helping you modify your behavior so that you have less emotional distress.
So that you have less anxiety.
