Now I've said it to tell people the obvious yes, and it's a true story, except I changed the name, but um

So Betty and the Bats is an example of the hidden demands that can be on our students when we give them an activity, very much like the one that I just gave when I said, here, write a sentence and not realizing all the things.

And that is, um, so Betty is a student and her assignment is to write two complete sentences about bats, because we were learning about bats.

We were also learning about constructing a complete sentence.

And what we do in the book is we start by saying, look at all these jobs, this cognitive load that's behind this assignment.

We think

Write the sentences.

Show me what you learned about bats.

But there's so much more behind that.

So what we do throughout each chapter as we talk about um different ways to again decrease interference, increase automaticity, as we discuss the different executive functions, we go back to Betty and we say, okay, now that we've you've learned about

inhibition and what that means and what that looks like and and what can make uh our inhibitory processes strains.

Um let's look at Betty again and let's see what we can do in that example to make this activity a little easier.

to to remove some of the cognitive load, the unnecessary cognitive load.

Um, and so that's kind of the through line of the book is to say, okay, now that we've learned in this chapter about this, let's go back to Betty.

What are we gonna do, you know, to change?

We're gonna give her, uh she's she's not fluent on um certain letters, so let's give her a resource right by her spot.

We're not just gonna make it the whole alphabet.

We're gonna do be very so we're very specific about um

even when we give supports how we can really um
