It, this is a difference in neurological wiring.
So what happens is that as your estrogen drops, which is what happens not only in perimenopause and menopause, it also happens like right before your period starts.
It also happens right after you give birth.
So postpartum.
So like these are hormonal dips that even people outside of perimenopause, when you're in these low estrogen states, you also get a drop in dopamine.
So estrogen drops, dopamine drops.
That's a problem because dopamine is in charge of alertness and attention regulation and mood regulation.
So if already you are at a deficit and you're less able to weather the storm, something triggers this RSD.
It feels so big, so overwhelming.
And a lot of times I will tell you that my patient's,
will come in and I'm seeing a lot of patients.
I think I'm so grateful for this new movement that we're talking about perimenopause so much more, but they'll come to me to talk about perimenopause and the emotional regulation stuff is the thing that drives them to the physician in the first place.
Oh, because I think what people always think about with postpartum and when you look at that patient population that has ADHD and these kind of hormonal things happening, they think...
this is hormonal.
It's, you know, it's just going to be some mood stuff that happens, but you'll get through it.
You'll get through it.
It's no big deal.
And, or like what happens is like, let's throw an antidepressant at it and it'll get better.
Right.
The problem is with ADHD, because of that drop in dopamine, it's not just that your mood is significantly worse.
