Cardiac rehabilitation is an outpatient program.
It can be delivered across hospitals, public and private, and also through community health.
And basically it's made up of three main components.
So the first one is tailored and supervised exercise, which is usually tailored and supervised by a physio or an exercise physiologist.
The second is education, so education on risk factor management,
how to adjust after you've had a heart event, things like that.
And then the third part is psychosocial support.
So psychology support, peer support in the programs.
So what are the benefits?
Why cardiac rehab?
Yes, well, cardiac rehab has...
has an enormous amount of evidence behind it.
So we know it reduces cardiovascular mortality by 26%.
It reduces the chance of having a second heart attack by 18%.
And it reduces your chance of coming back to hospital for any cause by 23%.
And then the other thing that's really critical, I think, is that it increases a patient's quality of life.
So it's not just about living longer, but it's about having a long, healthy, quality life.
And we also know that it's cost-effective.
The other two words that we use a lot in cardiac rehab is it gives patients confidence.
So confidence to return back to their normal lives, confidence to return back to work, and also really importantly, confidence to return or to start and engage with exercise.
