We were missing the mark because we weren't talking about actually let's change the work environment.
Let's change the structure.
And I know that we've had on the ANCC, the critical care, has done a lot of great work in a healthy work environment.
So we're finally bringing all those pieces together to say to change well-being, you have to change structures.
I was deeply honored to have been asked to help build our office of well-being at Emory Healthcare.
We had a team of 121 representatives from across the profession.
The philosophy was, in the words of John F.
Kennedy, a rising tide lifts all boats.
So it wasn't just well-being for nurses and not just for doctors, it was for everyone that engages with patients or supports people that does.
So we had a huge team, and my co-chief is a physician.
So we had this nurse-physician shared model to build this system-wide office that said, everybody deserves well-being.
Support from the systems level.
So that part of that work was changing policy.
We changed a rest policy that I'm really proud of.
We had a line in our policies that said if you're caught sleeping on the job, it's immediate termination.
If you're out an hourly worker.
And we know how many nurses every year die because they fall asleep behind the wheel after working overnight, or get in a car wreck and injure themselves or others.
And overnight.
And we know the evidence says people need to rest.
And we know that.
