Yes, especially during adolescence, because it's a critical period for identity development.

Being sent away can reinforce very different messages depending on how the child interprets the experience.

Some children see it as an opportunity to change.

Others experience it as rejection or abandonment.

And I've certainly worked with patients who experience it as the latter, particularly those who came from

emotionally neglectful homes.

Often there was very little communication surrounding the decision to send them off to begin with.

No one truly explained why they were being sent away, as in their caregiver, whoever that might be, didn't help them distinguish between their behavior and their worth as a person, meaning it was the behavior

And the behaviours they were seeing that needed to change, not that they were a bad or unlovable child.

That distinction is really important.

And in some cases, contact with their family while they were there was also limited or inconsistent, or their family just didn't even make contact when they could have.

And that was making them feel less connected or supported while they were away.

And that was always a very harmful message that they internalized, especially if there was no one there to help them change.

We don't know if this is even true.

It is entirely possible Ivan took credit for something he didn't do for attention, reputation, or excitement, particularly given what we've already discussed about his upbringing and the way violence may have been normalized or even glamorized.
