I was well into my medical training, but still in my training. So I spent 16 years total, including college all the way through to the finish line in order to become a board-certified gastroenterologist. So, and I was 50 pounds overweight.

I mentioned earlier, like I played soccer, I played three sports in high school, right? So I was an athlete, but here I am. And I was 50 pounds overweight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I was anxious, depressed. And even though on paper, everything was going my way in real life, I was like basically had extremely low self-esteem.

So I was struggling and I knew I was struggling and I needed to fix this and I needed to figure out. All right. And so what I did being at this time, single in my early thirties, being a dude, I went to the gym and I started doing like really quite intense workouts where I would like basically smash the weights for 45 minutes. And then if it was cold, then I would run.

For anywhere from a 5 to a 10k and if it was warm, I was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina I would jump in the pool and do 50 to 100 links So that's what I was doing. I got faster. I got stronger. I did not lose the gut I didn't lose the weight. I didn't fix the issues. That's not to devalue exercise. It's important

But when I was missing nutrition, that was the issue is that I was raised on a diet where my parents were divorced. I lived in upstate New York. My mom was at work. I would come home. I had two younger brothers and we would fire up the grill and we would eat hot dogs every single day, right? That's my normal.

And so I had to come to the realization that my food that I loved and that my family celebrated was actually my problem. And that required me to make a change. What worked for me was to initially start with a blender and create smoothies. And I felt instantly so much better. I was so energized when I did that.
