We have Professor Bas for Plancken.
Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology, University of Bath, specializing in behavioral and mental habits.
He's joining us down the line.
Can you give us a few examples, Bas?
I think
least colloquially sort of think about good and bad habits sort of on the way home, whether it's I always stop for a cigarette or I stop for a burger, there's sort of habitual things where your brain responds to cues in ways that are not helpful for you.
Is that a right way of thinking about habits and does that apply to routines?
It's so interesting to try and figure out in my life.
That's such a helpful way of thinking about it.
So the tunnel vision seems terribly, terribly important to me.
That the reduction of the alternatives.
So over the last year, I've done very little exercise.
And a lot of that has been that on any given day, I could do exercise or I could do something else.
And so a couple of weeks ago, I got the calendar out and just wrote that I would do some exercise every day and wrote when I was going to do it.
And that tunnel vision.
has created a complete lack of alternative.
So my routine is to do my exercise at a certain time of day.
Am I on the way to a habit?
Is this a good way of approaching turning a positive routine into a positive habit?
And we do think of having a consistent routine as being a good thing, but are there bad routines?
