And it's certainly very strange to think that there's something about a story matched

that is told to you by a friend that is different to any book you could read. matched

We used to share a room growing up and we had two single beds just next to each other. matched

He's my older brother and he's always looked after me. matched

Always squabbling, fighting. matched

It's hard to have kids without that happening, but for the most part, we were good friends, and he really looked after me. matched

One of the ways he did that was telling me stories before bed, when we were meant to be asleep, of course. matched

And they weren't particularly, you know, rich and complex or fantastical. matched

In fact, they were mostly fairly crude. matched

We used to have a story, a recurring story, matched

that he would tell about a chicken and a cow and their adventures on a farm. matched

And they would just get up to silly, silly things. matched

That was the real aim. matched

There was no profound human metaphor. matched

the idea was to be as silly as possible and I remember laughing so hard I couldn't breathe and I'm fairly sure many a time our parents came up to tell us off and tell us to go to bed matched

because we just couldn't contain our laughter. matched

You know, thinking back on those memories really does make me sort of reassess what it is that a story is or should be. matched

Because to stand by what I said before and say matched

that stories need to have some kind of allegory to be truly worthwhile would too be me saying that those stories my little older brother once told me were somehow matched

They were most certainly worthwhile, as silly and ridiculous as they were. matched
