It was just a series of annual fixtures with no competition.
Say if you were the chairman of Taranaki Rugby Union, which is where I grew up and Taranaki were close to my heart, that rugby team, you always had an annual fixture with King Country.
So you'd ring up that chairman and say, all right, this is the date we've got set aside for this.
We'll play Wanganui on this date.
How about we give Wellington a ring and see if we can get a game with them this season?
So it was very disorganized.

You were just playing fixtures.

And it was very, you had to get fortunate to even get a shield challenge.
Like you can ring up and say, hey, we want a shield challenge.
Because everyone did.
Yeah, you know, so it was kind of, it was this weird thing where you hoped you ran into an away game with the team that had the shield at the time.
And the shield was massive.
Like, again, using Taranaki as my reference point, when Taranaki won the shield in the 50s and 60s,
the New Plymouth Airport is quite a long way out of New Plymouth in those days.
That entire road, it was just packed with cars parked all the way out to it.
And the Shield Heroes were, it was like a parade all the way into New Plymouth.
It was massive if you won the Shield.
