It's an iconic image of Colin Meads, isn't it, with the sheep under his arm, walking up the hill on his Te Kooti farm.
Yeah, if you're a Ford, you're a farmer, essentially.
And if you're a bit younger, a student or a banker or something, you're playing in the backs.
So that's how it works.
So Auckland Canterbury,
wasn't really a thing then until, I think it was 82, 83, a yappy little former halfback from Waitemata Rugby Club took over the coaching of Auckland.
They suddenly got very strong and at the same time a movement was brewing in the south where a farmer, Grizz Wiley, got hold of the Canterbury team and quite honestly rugby would never be the same in New Zealand again.
Two very different people.
Diametrically opposed in so many ways.
But I think this was a real time of flux.

well, 1975 around there to 1984, and it essentially froze the economy.
New Zealand was incredibly inward-looking.
We were still heavily reliant on our farming industry.
Then in 1984,
Everything kind of changed.
The fourth Labour government came in, and I know this is not a political show, but it does have a kind of wide implication here.
Going in deep here, yeah.
New Zealand was deregulated, and suddenly there was all this opportunity for entrepreneurs and for business in New Zealand that just didn't exist before.
