For instance, recently they have PACER nurses.
These are mental health trained nurses who are embedded within police stations who are meant to go out, you know, when there is a person with having a mental health episode.
But it doesn't seem to be working.
They don't seem to be, I mean, certainly with Jodie Knott, she had three encounters with police in a period of about three months and that pace of nurse didn't go out to any of them.
We spoke to probably the most well-recognized police integrity expert in Australia, Professor Tim Prenzler from the Center for Public Integrity.
I asked him what we can change in relation to police investigating police, how we can fix it.
And his response was, look, police investigating police doesn't work.
We know this.
The research shows that.
His answer is to look at the Northern Ireland model, where they've created a whole independent body which does all police investigations.
In New South Wales, we have a body that does some of that.
That's the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
But it looks at about 70 to 80, or runs 70 to 80 investigations a year.
By comparison, New South Wales Police run 1,500 internally.
So I guess it's a question for our politicians.
What are they willing to do to ensure the appropriate scrutiny and oversight of policing?
