Because shortly after she was put back on death row, the landmark case of Furman v. Georgia ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional and invalidated the death sentences of nearly 700 people nationwide, including Mean Marie.
Her sentence was changed to life in prison plus 10 years, even after Florida became the first state to institute a new death penalty that met more rigorous requirements set forth in the Furman case.
They couldn't go back and retroactively give the death penalty to any Floridians in the original 700.
So instead of getting the chair at 40 years old, Marie died of natural causes at 80, like a frigging champ.
She beat the state of Florida.
She really did.
Not many people do.
I mean, she still died in prison.
Yeah, but she didn't die in the chair.
That's right.
