How can you show such little violence?
That's glamorizing.
So which is it?
Too much violence is glamorous?
Right.
Or too little violence is glamorous?
So I just think you can't win with a certain crowd who just finds this kind of storytelling offensive.
And you can choose not to watch, but don't tell me as a maker of content not to do it as long as you do it responsibly.
I mean, honestly, this goes back to when I said I hate the phrase true crime.
People call me a true crime pioneer.
I like the pioneer part, the true crime pioneer.
Kind of gives me the willies because there is a lot of irresponsible true crime out there.
There is stuff that's totally off that makes fun of
in a way that I think is disrespectful to victims.
There's a lot of scripted filmmakers who will go nameless, you know, that do scripted versions of stories and don't reach out to the victims, don't make sure it's okay with them, you know, don't even interact with the victims in terms of, or the real people involved to tell the story, which I think is unconscionable.
So for me, the phrase true crime conjures up
this baggage of wallowing in the misery of others just to tell a story without any concern for social justice or victims.
And so I consider myself a criminal justice filmmaker who tells dark stories of crime.
And even with Bundy, when they say you're glamorizing, you're sensationalizing, there's not a single show that I've done where I don't ask myself, what's the social justice needle to move here?
